We are thrilled to announce five brilliant young artists as finalists of the 2025 American Pianists Awards! Michael Davidman, Avery Gagliano, Sasha Kasman Laude, Elliot Wuu and Angie Zhang will compete for the Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship. By virtue of their selection from a pool of nominations from over 1,200 industry professionals, each pianist has been awarded a $25,000 prize. In April 2025, the winner will receive career support valued at more than $200,000, including two years of career management and public relations assistance, a media tour, an artist residency at the University of Indianapolis, a recording contract with Steinway & Sons record label, performance engagements both nationally and abroad, and more.

The five finalists were selected in a blind audition process from nominations solicited from over 1,200 piano educators, artists and other industry professionals. Open to American citizens ages 18-30 and by nomination only, the competition provides a unique  platform for the national classical community to identify the best of young, upcoming American piano talent every four years.

By virtue of their selection, each of the five finalists has already won a cash prize of $25,000, performance opportunities, and global visibility from advancing to the finalist stage of the competition. Further, the winner of the 2025 American Pianists Awards will receive career support valued at more than $200,000 that includes: two years of career management and public relations assistance, a media tour, an artist residency at the University of Indianapolis, a recording contract with Steinway & Sons record label, performance engagements both nationally and abroad, and more. The 2025 Awards winner will additionally embark on a new recital tour during the 2026-27 season, as well as performing with the American Pianists Association’s partner orchestras: the Phoenix Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and more, to be announced.

Welcome to our first class of the Spring Semester! We'll be joined by pianist Jialin Yao. A student of Sergei Babayan, Jialin has been praised by Dmitri Alexeev for his “mature, sensitive and polished playing." He will perform Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G minor, BWV 885, a Chopin Etude, Beethoven's Sonata No. 13 in E-flat, Op. 27 No. 1 and Prokofiev's dazzling Toccata in D minor.

Next, we'll welcome the LA-based pianist and teacher Charles Wilbur. A dedicated Scriabin aficionado, Charles will perform the two-movement Sonata No. 4 in F-sharp minor, Op. 30, the Etude in F-sharp major, Op. 42 No. 4 and Vers la Flamme (Toward the Flame), based on Scriabin's (chillingly prophetic) theory that the world would one day be destroyed by heat.

Finally, we'll welcome the brilliant Michael Davidman for a mini-recital of short works by Sergei Rachmaninov, Amy Beach, Michael Abels, in addition to Chopin's Ballade No. 1 and Balakirev's masterclass in virtuosity, Islamey.

The Orchestra of the International Center for Music will present its annual Valentine’s concert on Friday, February 9th, 7:30 PM, at the gorgeous Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel at Park University. The program will be under the direction of Kansas City favorite, guest conductor Timothy Hankewich, music director of Orchestra Iowa, who returns for his third appearance with the ICM Orchestra. Maestro Hankewich has selected music by Bach, Boccherini, Debussy, Schubert, and Vivaldi, and the featured work will be Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, K. 467, featuring pianist Michael Davidman.

.

The concert begins with the second movement of Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite, a piece that has become known as Bach’s Air on the G String. A slow and dreamy melody hovering over a gentle walking bass line creates a mood of quiet contemplation and serves as introduction to all the music that follows on the program. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 is one of the composer’s most popular works for both audiences and players alike. Many listeners may be most familiar with the Andante second movement, as this gained popular fame for its use in the 1967 film “Elvira Madigan,” and a photo from the film even graced the cover of the LP used for the recording. This performance will feature soloist Michael Davidman from the prestigious ICM Piano Studio under the tutelage of ICM Artistic Director, Founder and Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Stanislav Ioudenitch.
